Go Gluten Free and Fix Your Brain by Kelly Brogan MD

Folks with Lupus often have brain fog and memory problems. I remember sometimes my brain felt just to tired to think. I would want to run away from problems. My brain felt so much better when I added supplements and took out the foods I was allergic/intolerant to. The main ones being wheat/gluten, dairy, and eggs.

I've Been Slacking...

Realized I've been slacking off on routinely writing for Lupus Hope. I have been posting some on Facebook. I have to double check if I have a link on my blog to my Lupus Hope Facebook page. Since my move to Eastern Long Island way too much has been going on.

Started my children in their Senior year, last year, out here and they didn't do well at all. So we rented an apartment to get them back into their old school district. The added expense of the apartment and gas for travel, hurt, plus paying for our current mortgage as well.

Then this year they both started college and more money was needed.

Also 2 sick and old doggies (the dogs are 10 and 11 years old) in the mix and vet trips. One dog has developed incontinence, the other has a mass that we think is cancer....(even with feeding the dogs quality homemade raw food diets... go figure)

OK enough about me. I had 2 reasons for starting this blog.
1) To document my Lupus healing journey
2) To share information to help others with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases (and other diseases of other types) because something I try, or research, or learn can possibly help you all and your friends and family

Gluten sensitivity masquerading as systemic lupus erythematosus by Dr M Hadjivassiliou

A paper that everyone should read. If you look at Celiac Disease/Gluten Intolerance symptoms and Lupus symptoms side by side, many symptoms are far too similar. Click below to read the paper

Long Island Health Food Stores

Here is a list of Long Island Health Food Stores from LI Holistic Health (also I would like to add Rita's Real Foods in Bayport, Live Island Cafe in Huntington, Organically Yours in Northport,
It's Only Natural Food and Wellness Store in Bellport, Halsey's Green Thumb Farmer Market in Water Mill has many grocery items as well as, gluten free items, raw nuts, dried fruits, beans, rice, pasta, chips, cheeses and check out any other farmer's markets too) It's great to keep a list of Health Food Stores where you live or where you travel so you always have food options whether you are raw, macrobiotic, gluten free, dairy free, egg free, nut free, paleo, or whatever diet you personally follow.

When you travel look on-line for health food stores in the location you will be travelling. Also don't forget if you are travelling during the warmer months you can look to your local farmer's markets as well!

Molds on "travelling" foods

At the end of the "shipping" season and the start of the Long Island growing season, I started to think about all the mold growing on shipped produce. It is a LONG way from California to New York. That is where most organic fruit/veggies are from that come to NY after our growing season is over.

I'm not sure where the grains/dry beans and nuts are from as many times they are not labeled. These products are often moldy too.

If you have issues with mold this could be a real problem for your body. When we outwardly see mold growing it has already been growing on the food for some time.

Another reason to eat locally grown produce...or start growing your own garden/food.

Some foods that are affected are; all fruits and veggies, nuts, beans, grains, flours just about everything!

Also watch for tropical fruits, they also come a long way to most location, mangoes; pineapples, coconut, etc.(and these are often irradiated to get rid of any critters trying to hitch a ride to the US)

Free Streaming Longevity Conference- Nadine Artemis on Sun and Healing (and LOTS more)

Check out the talk by Nadine Artemis first if you can. It is on sunlight and healing. Please be cautionary and check with your doctor, preferably a holistic doctor, before engaging in sun "therapy" You need to make sure your body has the nutrients and minerals needed to tolerate the sun. Also sun exposure can cause issues in Lupus patients. Please watch and make your own decision with your doctor. This is only free until Saturday night. Enjoy...

Not All Super Foods are for Everyone by By Christine H. Farlow, D.C.

A really great article...also something I have not mentioned enough. You CAN be sensitive/intolerant  to a super food too! Just because it's a super food, it isn't good for your body if you have issues digesting it and your immune system kicks in and creates inflammation. Click below to read the article. Everyone is different!

Best and Worst Things about being Gluten Free from Celiac Chicks

I loved this article. To read it click the link below.

I agree, most times I feel so much better by avoiding gluten (and dairy and eggs, in my case) and avoiding these foods is well worth it, but it is hard at times and can be frustrating when you can't eat what you'd really like to. Think... being at an Italian or other favorite bakery and not being able to pick anything to eat...so sad. On the other hand I can almost re-create any food at this point to satisfy a craving, it's not a perfect recreation...my pizza is delicious, but it is NOT NY delicious thick crust cheesy pizza. Also it is VERY frustrating to not be able to get foods on the run, when hungry, and that I have to cook/prepare so much of the foods that my family and I eat. It's lots of work.
My daughter and I were just making a list of places we can eat with no issues. They include
Cornucopia health food store Sayville, Babycakes Bakery in NYC, Live Island Cafe (raw food) in Huntington. We need to avoid gluten dairy and eggs so it is a little harder for us.

Foods to Eat for Sun Protection from the Inside Out

I have heard that the foods you eat can help your body thwart more of the UV rays it may be exposed to, (remember flourescent bulbs indoors produce UV rays too!) . Here are 2 great articles on the subject. Eat your watermelon and tomatoes (if  tolerated) and any other high lycopene foods for natural sun protection from the inside, out!

***MAKE SURE that you cover up with UV rated clothes/hats or use sun screen if you have Lupus, don't rely ONLY on foods you eat for sun protection***

Sunscreen or Not?- It's that time of the year again! -A repost

This festival is coming up again this weekend 2013...this is a repost of sunscreen info. Please read.

Went to a festival at an organic farm this past weekend and the sun "surprised" me I asked my husband to get my umbrella from the car even though I had a hat, my arms were bare...

Today it is 58 degrees in NY...chilly and cloudy....
This is the time we should all be careful about the sun, springtime. Most people with Lupus have sun sensitivity. I, myself, can feel achey and feverish and extremely tired after sun exposure. I can even end up getting Discoid Lupus sores.(haven't had them in a long time now)

Even though the weather is not quite hot the spring sun is still VERY strong! Don't be fooled. Now when I say I protect myself, I would rather use clothing, hats, umbrellas and good old tree shade. Most times I go out in the early morning or the early evening. The sun is the hottest/strongest between 10:00am -3:00 pm so stay in at those times or protect yourself very well!

There are so many toxic chemicals in sunscreens be VERY cautious of what you put on your skin!
Please read my past posts, linked below, there are also some great articles from others as well.
