Not All Super Foods are for Everyone by By Christine H. Farlow, D.C.

A really great article...also something I have not mentioned enough. You CAN be sensitive/intolerant  to a super food too! Just because it's a super food, it isn't good for your body if you have issues digesting it and your immune system kicks in and creates inflammation. Click below to read the article. Everyone is different!

Best and Worst Things about being Gluten Free from Celiac Chicks

I loved this article. To read it click the link below.

I agree, most times I feel so much better by avoiding gluten (and dairy and eggs, in my case) and avoiding these foods is well worth it, but it is hard at times and can be frustrating when you can't eat what you'd really like to. Think... being at an Italian or other favorite bakery and not being able to pick anything to eat...so sad. On the other hand I can almost re-create any food at this point to satisfy a craving, it's not a perfect recreation...my pizza is delicious, but it is NOT NY delicious thick crust cheesy pizza. Also it is VERY frustrating to not be able to get foods on the run, when hungry, and that I have to cook/prepare so much of the foods that my family and I eat. It's lots of work.
My daughter and I were just making a list of places we can eat with no issues. They include
Cornucopia health food store Sayville, Babycakes Bakery in NYC, Live Island Cafe (raw food) in Huntington. We need to avoid gluten dairy and eggs so it is a little harder for us.

Foods to Eat for Sun Protection from the Inside Out

I have heard that the foods you eat can help your body thwart more of the UV rays it may be exposed to, (remember flourescent bulbs indoors produce UV rays too!) . Here are 2 great articles on the subject. Eat your watermelon and tomatoes (if  tolerated) and any other high lycopene foods for natural sun protection from the inside, out!

***MAKE SURE that you cover up with UV rated clothes/hats or use sun screen if you have Lupus, don't rely ONLY on foods you eat for sun protection***

Sunscreen or Not?- It's that time of the year again! -A repost

This festival is coming up again this weekend 2013...this is a repost of sunscreen info. Please read.

Went to a festival at an organic farm this past weekend and the sun "surprised" me I asked my husband to get my umbrella from the car even though I had a hat, my arms were bare...

Today it is 58 degrees in NY...chilly and cloudy....
This is the time we should all be careful about the sun, springtime. Most people with Lupus have sun sensitivity. I, myself, can feel achey and feverish and extremely tired after sun exposure. I can even end up getting Discoid Lupus sores.(haven't had them in a long time now)

Even though the weather is not quite hot the spring sun is still VERY strong! Don't be fooled. Now when I say I protect myself, I would rather use clothing, hats, umbrellas and good old tree shade. Most times I go out in the early morning or the early evening. The sun is the hottest/strongest between 10:00am -3:00 pm so stay in at those times or protect yourself very well!

There are so many toxic chemicals in sunscreens be VERY cautious of what you put on your skin!
Please read my past posts, linked below, there are also some great articles from others as well.

Severe Energy Drop At Times?

One of the things that lead me to find out about my food allergy/ intolerance problem, even before I was tested, is the way I felt at certain times of the day, my energy would plummet until I felt like I would even pass out. or feel like I could just drop.

The most embedded experience in my mind of this happening to me, was going to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast years and years ago and having 2 donuts early in the morning. Right after I felt like I was getting the flu...extremely tired and feeling like all my energy to do anything had left me, I just felt like going back to bed and I barely woke up!

I blamed it on the sugar in the donuts...but now I know that although it could have been the sugar as well, I have major allergies/intolerances to eggs, wheat/gluten and milk, and that donut was a "triple threat".

I used to tell people the feeling was like a blanket going over my head but I could still see, or like my brain just left my body and it was hard to think , or it just felt like I could fall down, or like I was getting the flu. Do you, or someone you know, feel really bad at certain times of the day? Keep track of what you eat. Maybe you feel this way after donuts or after a bowl of pasta, or after eating a sandwich....please get an allergy test and don't continue eating foods that make you feel bad/worse.
Food should give you energy not make you feel like taking a nap.

Try this experiment, one day have a large salad with a few ounces of nuts or seeds or cooked beans or salmon or chicken  and a dressing of olive oil and vinegar or a raw foods nut dressing,(no croutons or heavy milk based or processed dressings) how do you feel after the meal? Then, the next day, have a bowl of pasta how do you feel after that meal? Choose what makes you feel good, especially if you have Lupus or any other health issues. Eat to live and feel great!

Reminders on Healthy Eating...

Good for me to remind myself every so often as well....I don't always eat healthy...sorry to say.

I have issues with gluten.dairy and eggs so I avoid those in my diet (am trying to cut back on soy also since I had a larger reaction on my last food allergy test.)

Lots of fresh veggies

Less to no grains

Some low sugar fruits

Whole, real foods

Meat or fish to get Omega 3's and/or iron (or make sure you include nuts/kale/beans and other omega 3 iron rich plant foods- at this point in my research  I feel meat and fish in small quantities is good for maintaining health)

Less to no refined sugar.

Less salt (if you overdo)

Less or preferably no processed meats/foods

Less to no canned foods

Water or tea (coffee can give issues to some)

Some things that still trip me up. I love to bake/make sweet treats. I love my dark chocolate. I also enjoy uncured nitrate free hot dogs (very rarely). I get lazy at times when faced with chopping veggies/making healthy foods (cooking and preparation lacks at times)
