Hashimoto's and Iodine a bad idea???

Check out this newsletter if you have issues with your thyroid. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and I have found Dr. Datis Kharrazian to be very knowledgeable.. He wrote a book called "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests are Normal.."  I highly recommend his book and his newletter.

  1. As of today 10/17/2010, from my own research I believe (my opinion) iodine in foods such as nori, and other sea veggies helps your thyroid. It has helped me and I have Hashimoto's. I would not take extra iodine supplements and I do not use iodized salt.
Please talk to your doctor and research for yourself also...I still think that Dr. K has great information in his book but I disagree with this piece of advice. As usual make your own decision with a doctor that you trust.

  2. Iodine stimulates TPO production, and thus TPO antibody production. That is why people with Hashimoto's must avoid iodine. Unfortunately, current protocol includes the avoidance of sea veggies. *sigh* Which bites because I used to like kelp in my stir-fry.

  3. Denny Waxman a macrocrobiotics counsellor in PA, for 35-40 years, said that he reverses thyroid conditions, including Hashimoto's Thyroiditis with various seaweeds in the diet.

I, myself, would try seaweeds for a time then get the TPO test, then eliminate seaweeds for a time and do the TPO test, if you want to experiment. Too bad someone hasn't done a conclusive study on this.

I think this is one of those issues that people are divided on. For me I use seaweeds in my diet I will let you all know when I go for my next TPO test as I have Hashimoto's myself...

Many people feel that the iodine and minerals in the sea weeds help the thyroid...

  4. I fully recommend bovine thyroid capsules for balancing out your thyroid problems. It may not work 100 percent, but it has a great track record to show for itself.

  5. It depends whether hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism is dominate, I suspect. I know people with Hashi's can suffer from either/both, but Iodine is bad for hypothyroid cause it suppresses Thyroid hormone production and good for hyperthyroid for the same reason. It might just depend on the person. I've heard that iodine can trigger the immune response. I'm experimenting with this myself.
